The head of El Salvador's electoral commission certified the victory of President-elect Alfredo Cristiani following a mandatory recount of nearly 1 million votes cast in Sunday's violence-marred election.

Central Election Council President Ricardo Perdomo congratulated the 41-year-old Cristiani Wednesday for his "indisputable, unquestionable victory."Perdomo issued the confirmation after a mandatory official recount of all 999,543 votes cast in an election scarred by widespread violence and a rebel intimidation campaign aimed at reducing voter turnout.

Election officials said Cristiani, leader of the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance, received 510,132, or 53.9 percent, of 946,687 valid votes, compared to 345,064, or 36.4 percent, for governing Christian Democratic Party candidate Fidel Chavez Mena.
