Morgan County Sheriff Bert Holbrook's assertions that his probe of the county school board took four months and cost $32,000 have been challenged by a resident who asked for the investigation.

Holbrook, in a letter Wednesday to county commissioners, said the expense of the investigation would be covered by existing budgets and would not require new appropriations. But Janet Jacobson, who asked for the investigation, said the figures provided by Holbrook are inflated.

"I don't know how in the world he could ever justify that," Jacobson said Friday. "He would have to work every day for a full year to come up with $30,000. That's a joke."

Holbrook's most recent letter said the $32,000 was eaten up mostly by personnel costs, which he estimated at $25 an hour over a four-month period.
