After suffering two consecutive defeats at home, the Hartford Whalers went to Boston Sunday and clinched the final playoff spot in the Adams Division.

Paul MacDermid chipped a bouncing puck over to Ray Ferraro who scored a power-play goal with 2:04 remaining sparking Hartford to a 3-2 victory over the Bruins and helping the Whalers secure fourth place in their division.

Hartford is 14 points ahead of the fifth-place Quebec Nordiques with 7 games remaining. Even if the Nordiques win all their remaining games, they could not finish with more than 32 victories, one shy of Hartford's current total.

Flyers 8, Maple Leafs 6

At Philadelphia, Brian Propp scored a power-play goal with 1:51 remaining to lift Philadelphia to only its second victory in its last 10 games. Propp, who also had 3 assists, gave the Flyers a 7-6 lead and Rick Tocchet followed with another power-play goal.

Oilers 3, NY Islanders 2

At Edmonton, Alberta, Mark Messier drilled in a 45-foot slap shot to spark a 3-goal outburst in the second period. The victory snapped a six-game winless streak for Edmonton and moved the Oilers into a tie with the Los Angeles Kings for second place in the Smythe Division.

Blackhawks 5, Red Wings 3

At Chicago, Steve Konroyd scored on a rebound at 15:35 of the third period and Troy Murray added a short-handed empty netter with less than a minute left to help Chicago overcome a two-goal deficit. The victory moved the Blackhawks 6 points ahead of last place Toronto in the battle for the final playoff spot in the Norris Division.
