Sgt. Mike Fenton of the Orem Department of Public Safety has been running around town a lot these days, preparing to carry the torch in the International Special Olympics run March 23.

The International Special Olympics will be held in Squaw Valley, Calif., beginning April 2. For several years, law enforcement officers from throughout the United States and several foreign countries have been involved as co-sponsors of the games.The torch run starts in San Francisco March 23. One officer from each of the 50 states and 20 foreign countries will carry the torch the 600 miles to light the fire at the start of the games.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition to nearly one million mentally retarded children and adults in more than 70 countries.

An 11 year veteran with the department, Fenton was selected to represent Utah. He has participated in several past runs that support the Utah and National Special Olympics.
