Next year's high school freshmen who want to attend a Salt Lake District high school outside of their attendance area must request the transfer before Aug. 1.

Nancy Hardy, district director of pupil services, said all eighth-grade students have received letters telling them of the procedures and deadlines. The deadline for the first batch of requests was March 6. She said only 28 students requested a transfer. The requests included 12 from West to East; eight from East to West; six from East to Highland; and two from Highland to East.

Last fall, the Salt Lake Board of Education modified its no-transfer policy. Students may apply for transfer to eliminate stress, to take advantage of curriculum at another school and to alleviate geographic isolation.
