Government troops clashed with communist rebels on the southern island of Mindanao, killing at least 16 people and wounding scores of others in two separate incidents, the military said today.

A military report said government troops killed at least 10 guerrillas and wounded an undetermined number of others during a battle Sunday in a remote, hilly area north of Davao City, 610 miles southeast of Manila.The report said army troops patrolling the area stumbled into a 100-strong group of communist New People's Army guerrillas near Paquibato village.

The report said the rebel casualty figure was based on an actual body count and gave no further details.

Also Sunday, five soldiers died and 17 were wounded when their vehicle struck a rebel land mine near Lakewood in Zamboanga del Sur province, about 550 miles south of Manila.
