The Utah State Racquetball Championships were played Saturday at the Sports Mall. According to the tournament director, this was one of the largest turnouts ever for this event.

Winning the men's open was 19-year-old Jamie Sumner of Orem. He beat 18-year-old Mike North of Salt Lake City in the finals. North won the first game, Sumner evened it in the second and then won the title in a third-game playoff. Scores were 10-15, 15-12, 11-6.In the women's open, Kim Despain of Orem needed three games to beat Amy Gueck of Provo for the title, 13-15, 15-6, 11-7.

Eric Storey, also of Orem, who won the boys' national 10 and under title this past summer, won the boys' 12 state crown over Troy Christensen, then finished runner-up in the boys' 16 and under to Jeff Arrington Jr.

Winner of the men's 35 and over title was Rick Strout over Greg Nelson in straight games, 15-10, 15-12, and winner of the men's 30 and over title was Tom Sherman over John Packard, 12-15, 15-4, 11-10.
