Judge Memorial capped an outstanding season with a thrilling 101-98 double-overtime victory over Calvert Hall, Saturday night in Alhambra Catholic Invitational action.
Judge finished with a 24-3 mark and grabbed the third place trophy for the second time in four trips.Jimmy Soto closed out his brilliant career at Judge with a 34-point effort. But the real stars were Rob Solvason and Chris Jones with 17 and 21 points, respectively.
Solvason hit a 3-point bomb with 20 seconds to go in the second overtime to tie the game at 98, and Jones hit a big free throw to give Judge a 99-98 lead with two seconds to go. Tim Green closed out the scoring with two free throws on an intentional foul.
"The mental toughness of this team never ceases to amaze me," Judge Coach Jim Yerkovich said. "Calvert Hall, a Baltimore city league champ, has tremendous talent and even though we were obviously disappointed in our tough loss last night, the kids bounced back to play a great game."
In what was easily the best game of the tournament, Judge jumped out to an 18-point lead early in the game, but Calvert Hall went to its inside strength to close within six at the half. The game see-sawed from that point until Robert Davilla hit a three-point shot to send the game into its first overtime. Neither team managed more than a two-point lead in the first stanza, which closed out at 93 apiece.
Hall jumped out to a three-point lead in the second overtime and kept that margin uniil Solvason's nothing-but-net shot.
