Investigators were seeking the whereabouts Friday of the most recent occupants of a home that was destroyed by fire earlier in the day.

Stacks of tires piled inside and even in the attic of the home at 2264 S. 13th East accelerated flames, said Salt Lake fire Battalion Chief Tom Tallon."There were obvious signs it was an intentional fire," Tallon said. The burning tires made the fire more difficult for the 12 responding firefighters to control.

The fire did not spread into the basement, but there was evidence transients had stayed there recently.

The blaze was reported by a passer-by who saw flames and smoke billowing from the house when he drove by shortly after 5 a.m.

A newspaper carrier told firefighters the house had been on his route recently. He noticed a short time ago that the front door had been broken off and personal belongings had been scattered around the yard, Tallon said.
