One-third of all AIDS cases in the United States are now drug-related and more than 400 were babies born with the deadly disease last year, most to parents who used intravenous drugs, the government said.

In 1988, a total of 10,747 drug-related AIDS cases were reported, up from 6,747 drug cases in 1987, the national Centers for Disease Control reported Thursday.The drug cases represented 33.3 percent of the total AIDS cases in 1988. In 1987, the 6,747 drug-related cases comprised 26.8 percent of the total AIDS cases, Buehler said.
