A former Salt Lake police officer accused of shooting at two men last month surrendered Wednesday to a 3rd Circuit judge.
Vernon L. Olson, 34, a seven-year veteran patrolman, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on one count of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony. He was later released under the supervision of Pretrial Services.According to police reports and a criminal complaint, two men were in a car southbound on Seventh East the night of Feb. 27 when another man pulled up alongside them and tried to run them off the road. The victims threw a can of soda pop at the car, at which time they were fired upon. The bullet pierced the windshield and lodged in the driver's side arm rest.
Olson had been fired from the Police Department last July.
