Rep. Jim Hansen, R-Utah, introduced two bills on Wednesday that would establish a 3,100 mile-long scenic trail from Mexico to Canada, running through Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. The proposed trail, like the Appalachian Trail in the East, would make spectacular scenery accessible to hikers.
The trail, which would cover 450 miles in Utah, would run up spine of the Wasatch Mountains through the 1st and 3rd Congressional districts.Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, who has sparred with Hansen on other environmental issues, said he would be pleased to back the trail idea.
Hansen said the National Park Service, the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management all have agreed to support his measures. Volunteers, he added, would be available to help map and mark the route.
Most of the trail would be walkable.
