The San Francisco Council of Churches has gone broke, officials said.

"As of today, the council is defunct," the Rev. Norman Leach, executive director of the organization, said as he cleaned out his desk Tuesday. The organization has a $2 million annual budget, but faces a $200,000 deficit, said Leach.

The council's five staff members were told March 9 they were being laid off, according to Leach, who blamed the organization's financial problems on its board's "lack of expertise."

"They are good and sincere Christians, but they don't know how to run a business," he said.
