Officials sought Wednesday to determine the cause of the collision of two U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter jets in which one pilot was killed and the other parachuted to safety, a spokeswoman said.
The accident took place Tuesday during a routine training mission over central Cuenca province, about 85 miles southeast of Madrid's Torrejon Air Base, Master Sgt. Cliff Washington said.Ms. Washington said the crash killed 1st Lt. Daniel R. Johnson, 25, of Wayzata, Minn., while the pilot of the other single-seat jet, Capt. Steven Kempf, 27, of Glendale, Ariz., escaped unharmed.
Both aircraft belonged to the U.S. 401st Tactical Air Wing squadron, which is part of the U.S. 16th Air Force headquartered at Torrejon.
