Seventeen prize rabbits valued at about $5,000 were mutilated early Sunday - an act officials believe was part of a neighborhood feud.
Some of the rabbits' heads were bashed, others were stabbed with a long knife and two of the animals were decapitated, according to a Salt Lake County sheriff's report. The dead animals were discovered scattered throughout the yard of the owners, as well as neighboring yards on the 37th South block of Franklin Road (7465 West). The report said the incident may have been in retaliation against the owners, who had apparently made calls to the sheriff's office complaining about dogs running loose in the neighborhood. The owner apparently shot a dog that was getting into his rabbits' cages earlier this month. The shooting "infuriated the surrounding neighborhood," the report said.
Four tires were also slashed during the incident, which is still being investigated.
