Mark Smith, of the Utah Independent Living Center, boards a UTA bus as Kathy McCune of the UTA looks on. The two were helping kick off the "Adopt-A-Curb" program to help handicapped people become "fully integrated into the community." The program - organized by the Independent Living Center, the Western Rehabilitation Institute, the Utah Transit Authority and Salt Lake City - calls for individual and corporate sponsors to donate money to help repour curbs so they are more accessible to people in wheelchairs. The coalition is targeting intersections on UTA bus routes and is looking for $500 contributions. Western Rehabilitation has already donated $500 for one corner at this intersection at 1300 S. Fifth East. It will permit handicapped people to be "more independent and more mobile in the community," Smith said.
