THREE UTAH BANKS WERE RANKED AMONG THE TOP 100 COMMUNITY BANKS IN THE NATION, ACCORDING TO RANKINGS BY AMERICAN BANKER, A DAILY TRADE PUBLICATION. THE LISTING, BASED ON ASSETS FOR THE FIRST NINE MONTHS OF 1988, HAD BRIGHTON BANK IN SALT LAKE CITY RANKED FOURTH, BARNES BANKING CO. IN KAYSVILLE RANKED 35TH AND COMMUNITY FIRST BANK OF CLEARFIELD RANKED 78TH. COMMUNITY BANKS ARE FEDERALLY INSURED COMMERCIAL BANKS THAT ARE INDEPENDENTLY OWNED, OR OWNED BY A ONE-BANK HOLDING COMPANY AND HAVE ASSETS BETWEEN $50 MILLION AND $175 MILLION. THE THREE UTAH BANKS MAKING THE TOP 100 RECOGNIZES THEIR STRONG PERFORMANCE IN A DIFFICULT MARKET, SAID GEORGE SUTTON, UTAH COMMISSIONER OF FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS. HE ADDED THAT SMALL COMMUNITY BANKS HAVE GOOD PROFIT POTENTIAL BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT AS HEAVILY EXPOSED TO COMMERCIAL BORROWERS.
