A Provo man charged with rape and kidnapping has been ordered to undergo a 30-day evaluation at the Utah State Hospital in Provo to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.

Jack Jessop, 45, was ordered to undergo the evaluation by 4th Circuit Judge George E. Ballif during a preliminary hearing Friday morning. Jessop's attorney, Stott Harston, filed the request for the competency hearing because of "emotional instability" Jessop has exhibited while in custody at the Utah County Jail.Jessop is charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated rape and aggravated robbery in the Feb. 22 abduction of a Provo woman from a convenience store. He is also charged with being a habitual criminal.
