A Salt Lake County man charged with two felonies in connection with the shooting death Sunday of his father and the stabbing of his mother faces a preliminary hearing March 29 before 3rd Circuit Judge Paul Grant.
Gary Don Beals, 32, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Arthur Don Beals, 55, who was stabbed and shot twice with a .357-caliber revolver.Also charged with attempted second-degree murder, Beals is accused of trying to kill his mother, Luwana Beals, 51, with a knife.
Mrs. Beals escaped the attacks and called the sheriff's office from a neighbor's home, according to reports. Arthur Beals was dead when deputies arrived.
Gary Don Beals was being held Thursday in the mental health unit of the Salt Lake County Jail.
Luwana Beals, who suffered a punctured lung, underwent surgery at Cottonwood Hospital, where she was in stable condition Thursday.
