The wife of the USS Vincennes' skipper narrowly escaped injury Friday when a bomb destroyed the van she was driving, police said. The San Diego-based Vincennes was the Navy ship that mistakenly shot down the civilian Iranian airliner last July while on duty in the Persian Gulf. Sharon Rogers, wife of Capt. Will Rogers III, was stopped at a red light at a San Diego intersection when an explosion rocked the vehicle, said police spokesman Bill Robinson. A construction worker nearby helped Rogers escape before the van was engulfed in flames, police said. She was taken to a police substation, where she was joined by her husband and investigators.
