More than 300 members and advisors of youth city councils from 20 Utah communities will meet in Logan March 9-11 for the sixth annual leadership institute.

"Participants will enhance their understanding of the democratic process and increase their leadership, organizational and human relations skills," said David Rogers, leader of the Utah State University Extension community resource development program.Rogers said youth city councils, started in 1975, have initiated drug abuse prevention programs, conducted anti-vandalism campaigns, improved community property and worked with senior citizen groups.

Communities that have sponsored youth councils include Hyrum, Mapleton, Orem, Providence, Richfield, Roy, South Ogden, Springville, Paradise, Price, Tremonton, West Bountiful, Ephraim, Cedar City, Mt. Pleasant, Lewiston, Payson, Pleasant Grove, Tooele, Manti, Moroni, Washington City, Wellsville, Layton, Fillmore, Delta, Murray, Vernal, River Heights and Beaver.
