Most chocolate lovers need no excuse to eat their favorite food, but they soon may have one.

A thin layer of chocolate may prevent water from a moist filling, such as caramel, from seeping into crunchy cookies or other baked goods. The chocolate helps keep the product from becoming soggy while sitting in vending machines and store displays, according to a recent report in the Journal of Food Science.

The study found that chocolate is even more effective than polyethylene - the material used to make plastic potato chip bags - in preventing sogginess.

Using this information, researchers can develop specific products, including cookie and cracker sandwiches, candies and even jelly doughnuts, the article concluded.
