A dozen San Juan County teenagers have been charged in a 64-count complaint with slaughtering deer wintering in southeastern Utah, state Wildlife Resources Division officials said Friday.

Only one of the suspects - Shane Turner, 18, Monticello - is being charged as an adult. Turner faces a March 9 arraignment in 7th Circuit Court on the misdemeanor complaint. The other 11 youths, ages 15 to 17, will be arraigned March 22 in juvenile court, said division law enforcement spokesman Rudy Musclow.

The suspects' arrests last January followed a two-month investigation of out-of-season deer slayings, said Musclow. Most of the animals were left where they fell, but the antlers were removed from "the three biggest bucks" and sold to a taxidermist for $50 each.
