Gary Wayne Parris, who accidentally started the 34,000-acre "Forty-Niner" brush and forest fire last fall, was sentenced Monday to a 3-year term at the state mental facility at Atascadero.

Parris last month was convicted on two felony counts and two misdemeanor counts but was then found legally insane.Parris, 39, a sometime window washer, was burning paper bags outside the abandoned shack he called home near Nevada City last Sept. 11 when brisk winds carried the burning paper to nearby brush, starting the fire that blackened large chunks of Nevada and Yuba counties.
