Authorities lifted a nationwide curfew, but constitutional rights remained suspended one week after rioting sparked by government austerity measures left at least 246 people dead.

Defense Minister Gen. Italo del Valle Alliegro said Monday that President Carlos Andres Peres decided to lift the curfew, which was announced Feb. 28 along with the suspension of constitutional rights, because "normality in everyday life has resumed."Government spokesman Reinaldo Figueredo said Monday that 246 people died and 1,831 were hurt in the rioting.
