A former Utah man entered guilty pleas Friday in a case where he is accused of taking advantage of residents for concrete proj-ects and then doing shoddy work or failing to start construction.

Paul L. Behrens, 44, Orange County, Calif., appeared before 2nd District Judge Ronald O. Hyde to enter a guilty plea to issuing a series of checks without sufficient funds. In a plea bargain agreement, the state dropped an additional felony charge of theft by deception.

The defendant earlier in the day entered guilty pleas in 3rd Circuit Court to misdemeanor charges of attempted advertising without a contractor's license and advertising without a contractor's license.

In exchange for those guilty pleas, other misdemeanor charges were dismissed.

Behrens will be sentenced in both district and circuit courts on May 27.
