The Utah Department of Transportation has closed a 40-mile section of U-36 in Tooele County to heavy trucks and vehicles due to road-base problems.

"Melting snow and ground thaw have reduced the stability of the highway subsurface to the point that it cannot handle heavy loads without sustaining severe damage," said department spokeswoman Shirley Iverson. The restriction bars vehicles with axle weights of 7 tons or more from using U-36 from the Tooele-Juab county line north to the junction with U-199, near St. John Station, said Iverson.
