Open burning of brush, leaves and weeds during spring cleanup of property in Davis and Salt Lake counties has been banned this year by the Utah Department of Health.

In Utah County, open burning will be allowed only through May 7, said Burnell Cordner, director of the department's Air Quality Bureau."State regulations allow for open burning of plant and tree cuttings as part of property cleanup," Cordner said, "provided the local county fire marshal has established a 30-day period for the purpose" up to May 30.

But fire marshals in Davis and Salt Lake counties have decided against such a designation this year, he said, "and the Weber County fire marshal is prohibited from doing so by county ordinance."
