Salt Lake fire officials were continuing their investigation of a fire of "suspicious origin" early Saturday that gutted a vacant apartment duplex.

Battalion Chief LaMont Epperson said 15-foot flames were shooting through the roof at 651 N. Second West when firefighters arrived at the house at 4:30 a.m. "The flames had gone through the main floor, up to the attic and through the roof," he said.Epperson said the fire burned for some time before neighbors noticed and called the fire department. "It got so bright (from the flames) that it finally woke up the neighbors," he said.
