Mother Nature slowed the cleanup on Friday of spilled oil containing toxic polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs.
Crews had hoped to finish the cleanup sometime Friday, but early morning snow and rain hampered their work. Cleanup efforts will continue Saturday and likely into Sunday, said Susan Broadbent, acting depot public affairs officer.Either lightening or a short circuit damaged a wooden power pole that caused a transformer in TAD's maintenance area to fall about 1:30 p.m., spilling about 16 gallons of oil onto the dirt, Broadbent said. Tests showed the oil contained PCBs.
Broadbent said the depot's fire and security departments contained the spill, placed the hazardous materials in sealed drums and transported them to an approved toxic substance control storage facility.
