Highland Park Elementary School and Bryant Intermediate School were first-place winners in the Salt Lake City School District's Future Problem-Solving Bowl.
At the academic event, which is part of the Extended Learning Program, student teams were given a problem about year-round schools and then were allowed two hours to think of a solution. There were 35 teams eight from intermediate schools and 27 from elementary schools competing at three different sites.In the elementary division, the winning Highland Park team included Hillary Dewsnup, Anna Parsons, Jennifer Richards and Sarah Smith. Another Highland Park team Tom Henriod, Ben Hollingshaus, Matt Milner and Ben Ricks placed second, while the Bennion Elementary team of Mariri Leining, Zach Magleby, Amy Morris and Rebecca Sutton came in third.
In the intermediate division, the Bryant Intermediate School team of Elizabeth Bertin, Shannon Bryner, Laura Monson and Samantha Stewart won first place. Another Bryant team of Cameron Alston, Moana Erickson, Robert Hansen and John Richards took second-place honors. The Glendale Intermediate team of Meredith Gaudig, Connie Larson, Donald Lewis and Vard McGuire finished third.
The winners will compete in the statewide Future Problem-Solving Bowl at Brigham Young University on April 16. Utah winners in the elementary, intermediate and senior divisions will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., in June for the international competition.
