About 10,000 people carrying palm leaves, white flags and peace banners marched Saturday to demand postponement of the presidential election scheduled for March 19 and a negotiated end to the civil war.

Leftist rebels accused the government of bad faith in the effort to schedule talks aimed at achieving peace. They said they are being "pushed to continue and escalate the war."The march through downtown San Salvador was sponsored by dozens of religious, political and student organizations.

"Because of this unjust war, we struggle for peace," said the marchers. Their column stretched for about two miles along Juan Pablo II Avenue running through the center of the city.
