Ogden Mayor Clifford Goff has rejected comments by the attorney for a local landlord that the city's plans to demolish the abandoned Shady Rest Motel may be racially motivated.

During Thursday's City Council meeting, attorney Dale Stratford, representing H.C. Massey, contended the city had left previous white owners of the motel alone. However, he alleged the city had exerted strong pressure on Massey to fix up the motel in the two years he's owned it."To suggest that we are dealing with him differently because he is a minority is fallacious," Goff said. "It is not accurate to any degree."

In addition to owning apartments in Ogden, Massey, who is black, is the director of the Ogden Area Community Action agency.

The council was considering a proposal to demolish the 31-unit motel because of safety concerns. City officials described the motel as a fire hazard.

Council members postponed action on the proposed demolition to allow Massey to sit down with building inspectors and discuss fire and safety concerns over the Shady Rest.
