An experimental U.S. military laser for the first time successfully shot down a high-speed target in a test over the New Mexico desert last week, the Defense Department said Friday.

The Navy's "Miracl" laser fired an intense, destructive beam of light at a 25-foot Vandal anti-aircraft missile flying low over the White Sands Missile Range Feb. 23, the Pentagon said. The missile was destroyed. While lasers have been used to shoot down slower-moving targets in previous tests, this was the first successful test against a high-speed tactical missile, the Pentagon said.
