A plainclothes city police officer was shot and killed early Friday during a shootout with two men he and his partner were questioning on a Brooklyn street, authorities said.

The 25-year-old victim, whose name was not immediately disclosed, was the first city police officer killed in the line of duty in 1989, said Sgt. Maurice Howard, a police spokesman.The officer was wounded in the lower abdomen in the 12:50 a.m. shooting and was taken in "very critical condition" to Kings County Hospital Center, where he was declared dead at 1:58 a.m., the sergeant said.
