Israeli warplanes flew over southern Lebanon Friday on an apparent reconnaissance mission to monitor the movement of hundreds of Moslem troops sent to the region by pro-Syrian authorities in Beirut, security officials said.

The officials said several Israeli jets passed at medium altitude over the port city of Sidon, 24 miles south of Beirut, and nearby regions as the Lebanese army troops were taking up positions.Palestinian and Moslem militia forces already in the area opened up with a hail of anti-aircraft fire as the Israel planes appeared, but missed the targets.
