A Utah federal magistrate has fined a Brigham Young University student $100 on his conviction of illegally rolling rocks down a Timpanogos Cave National Monument hillside and then lying to a park ranger.

Magistrate Calvin Gould also ordered Carl Doerfler, Provo, to perform 40 hours of community service work at Timpanogos Cave National Monument.Prosecutors said Doerfler was visiting the monument with three other BYU students when rocks were rolled down a hillside in violation of federal safety regulations.

The suspect also was convicted of lying to park Ranger Richard Wilson in giving the officer false information about his name and address before the defendant fled.
