Salt Lake police were investigating Thursday the robbery of an Avenues grocery store.

An employee was working the graveyard shift at Smith's, 402 E. Sixth Ave., when a customer approached him to make a purchase, the police report said. The man placed a bottle of pop on the counter and gave the checker a $1 bill.The clerk opened the cash drawer, got out the change and shut the drawer when the man came around the check stand, the report said. The robber put the gun to the clerk's shoulder and told him to open the drawer.

The bandit escaped on foot with an undetermined amount of cash.
