A Salt Lake man died following an accident in which the car he was driving collided broadside with a semitrailer truck attempting to turn around on Interstate 80 in Parleys Canyon.

George Robert Barnard II, 27, died in University Hospital at 11:44 p.m. Monday, nearly two hours after the accident, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.A passenger in the westbound Barnard car, Sidney A. Knowlton, 29, Salt Lake City, was in serious condition Tuesday in the same hospital, a spokeswoman said.

The accident occurred when Glen Paul Bowen, 34, Evart, Mich., realizing he had missed a delivery in Salt Lake City, attempted to turn around his eastbound truck two miles west of Parleys Summit and 11 miles east of Salt Lake City.

The truck was taking up three lanes of westbound traffic when the Barnard vehicle collided with it, the UHP said.

Bowen's wife, Susan, 41, was not injured.
