Hundreds of students crowded the corridors and stairwells of their university to cheer the son of the last Hungarian king, who was giving his first public speech in Communist Hungary.

The unprecedented event occurred Wednesday in a hall of the Karl Marx University of Economics, which proved too small to accommodate all who wanted to hear Otto von Habsburg, the former Hungarian crown prince.Von Habsburg, a 76-year-old West German citizen, arrived Tuesday to join a visiting delegation of the European parliament.

The multilingual intellectual, who is still addressed as "Your Majesty" by some of his friends in Austria and Germany, is a deputy to the Strasbourg parliament from the Bavarian Christian Social Union.
