San Diego Padres left-hander Bruce Hurst is getting off to a slow start this spring becasuse of stiffness in his pitching shoulder, The San Diego Union said Tuesday.

Hurst, the free agent who signed with San Diego during the off-season after 13 seasons with the Boston Red Sox organization, did not take part in Monday's workout and may not pitch in Friday's exhibition game against the California Angels.Pitching Coach Pat Dobson said the problem appeared to be off-season rust and could eventually go away as Hurst loosens up.
