Some Utah congressional candidates were among the biggest spenders and the biggest benefactors from political action committees nationwide, according to final reports on the 1988 election from the Federal Election Commission.

The FEC says Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, was among the biggest spending senatorial candidates; Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, was among the incumbent House members receiving the most from PACs; and Democrat Gunn McKay was among the non-incumbents who received the most PAC money.The FEC said that for the 1987-88 period, Hatch received the 14th most money of the 210 senatorial candidates nationally, $3.8 million; the 14th most in contributions from individuals, $2.5 million; received the ninth most from PACs and other committees, $1.17 million; spent the 15th most, $3.7 million; had the 10th most cash on hand, $443,171; and had the 17th largest debt still owed, $176,188.

The FEC said Owens received the 12th most of all the 1,581 House candidates nationally from PACs and other committees, $455,310.

Among just the 413 House incumbents, Owens received the 11th most from PACs; received the 41st most in total contributions, $736,198; spent the 49th most, $676,472; and owed the 42nd largest debt, $34,000.

Among the 704 challengers of incumbents, McKay - who unsuccessfully ran against Rep. Jim Hansen, R-Utah - received the sixth most money from PACs, $264,850; raised the 34th most total money, $392,478; and spent the 33rd most, $391,928.
