Utah's four Republican members of Congress and Gov. Norm Bangerter joined together Monday to ask Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, to help them put together the state's position for designating wilderness areas on Bureau of Land Management areas in Utah.

The five Republicans sent Owens a four-page draft of plans for public hearings, staff tours of proposed wilderness areas and consultation with officials for local government, oil, gas, mining, forestry, ranching and environmental groups.Owens and the Republicans have already said they are millions of acres apart on the amount of land that should be set aside as wilderness areas. Monday's offer would follow methods used three years ago when putting together wilderness plans for forest service land.
