Ed Giles successfully defended his Division 1 title Sunday during the Utah State Chariot Association's 18th Annual Championships.

Giles, South Jordan, covered the 440-yard course in 22.64 seconds to capture his third straight championship and will now head for Elko, Nev., to defend his world title next month.

Giles' effort helped his Utah Valley teammates to the club championship for the third straight year.

The state association also voted to move the championships to the new Golden Spike Arena in Weber County for the next three years. The championships have been held in South Jordan for their entire 18-year history.

Giles will be joined by about 40 other Utah teams for the world championships which will begin March 18 and run through March 25. The top 10 teams in the first four racing divisions will compete in Elko. However, only those from Division 1 will be eligible for the world championship. The others will race for divisional titles only.
