A 12-year-old Layton boy was listed in critical condition Wednesday in an Ogden hospital after being accidentally shot in the head Tuesday evening while on his way to a hunter safety education class.

Jason H. Lewis, 1500 Angle St., Layton, underwent surgery Tuesday evening at St. Benedict's Hospital after being shot over the left eye with a .22-caliber bullet from his own rifle, South Ogden Police Lt. Val Shupe said.Shupe said the boy and a companion were dropped off at the Division of Wildlife Resources' hunter education facility, which includes a shooting range, at 515 E. 53rd South in South Ogden at about 6:30 p.m.

The boy apparently stumbled going into the building, Shupe said, and his rifle butt struck the ground, causing the weapon to discharge. Shupe said the bullet entered just over the boy's left eye and exited through the back of his head.

"It was an unfortunate incident, an extremely unfortunate accident," said Shupe.
