The opposition crumbled and the New Mexico Legislature declared the "bizcochito" the official state cookie.
The controversy wasn't over whether the light, sugary confection should be the state cookie, but how to spell it. The tug of war continued until the final vote Monday in the House of Representatives, as it concurred with the spelling preferred by the Senate.Ever since the bill was introduced, there was a disagreement over whether the cookie should be spelled "bizcochito," or "biscochito."
Said Rep. Ramon Huerta: "It matters not a bit how it's spelled. What matters is the pronunciation."
