The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced that because of a limited roster of qualifying 1988 achievements, the 61st Oscars will see fewer nominations in the music categories.

No award for "Original Song Score" will be awarded this year. Academy rules stipulate a score must contain at least five original songs by the same writer or team of writers.A song score has not been recognized by the Academy since 1984, when Prince won for "Purple Rain." Only one picture with a qualified original song score was produced in 1988.

The annual Oscars will be presented on Wednesday, March 29, in Los Angeles.
