Rescuers searched the waters of the Atlantic Monday with little hope of finding 14 sailors missing for more than 36 hours after a cargo ship sank in a violent storm off the coast of southern Europe.

The sailors - three West Germans and 11 Filipinos - have been missing at sea since Saturday, when the Anna Leongardt, registered in Singapore, sank in the Gulf of Gascogne off the southwestern coast of France. At least 10 other people were killed in storm-related incidents, authorities said Sunday.

The weekend storm raged with winds gusting at up to 78 mph.
