J.R. Kearl, dean of general and honors education at Brigham Young University, has been named an associate academic vice president.

"Jim Kearl brings an excellent record in scholarship and administration to this new position," President Jeffrey R. Holland said in announcing the appointment Tuesday.Kearl will serve with Provost and Academic Vice President Jae R. Ballif and associate academic vice presidents Eliot A. Butler, F. LaMond Tullis and William E. Evenson.

He will continue as dean of general and honors education until a new dean is appointed, Ballif said.

Kearl is a professor of economics and law who joined the BYU faculty in 1975. He earned his bachelor's degree summa cum laude in mathematics and economics at Utah State University and his doctorate in economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
