The 21-member cheerleading squad at Weber High School used smiles, yells and kicks to win top honors at the National Cheerleading Championships in Anaheim, Calif., Sunday.
The group took first place in the Large Varsity All-Girl Squad competition, won the Overall Cheer award and was named the grand sweepstakes winner in the Overall award.Squad members Kristin Johnson and Jeni Excell also received invitations to cheer at an upcoming NCAA game in Seattle and Jenny Richins won a $1,000 scholarship and an invitation to cheer at next year's Hula Bowl in Honolulu. Excell won two $1,000 scholarships.
Adviser DeAnn Thorpe said cheerleading squads from 49 schools in the United States and Canada competed at the weekend event. The Weber High squad also won top honors at the competition two years ago, she said.
The squad that cheers on the Weber High Warriors includes four seniors, 10 sophomores and 7 juniors.
